On October 7, DanvilleSanRamon, part of Embarcadero Media, held a San Ramon candidate forum as part of its election coverage. Our team recorded the forum so residents can hear directly from the candidates.
Other opportunities to hear from council candidates have been limited. The League of Women Voters held a mayoral forum this year but no council forum. San Ramon council candidates did not attend the forum hosted by Tri-Valley Voice and Diya TV. At the Muslim Community Center’s forum, recording was restricted because some candidates were uncomfortable being recorded.
Residents deserve opportunities to compare candidates, examine their positions, and revisit their answers before voting.
My concern about local accountability goes beyond election coverage. When the council removed voter-approved Measure G through changes described as “text amendments,” without returning the decision to voters, I believe local media should have scrutinized that action more closely.
I started a local news publication because our community needs independent reporting that asks difficult questions and holds elected officials accountable. Public trust depends on both transparent government and a press willing to challenge it.
