Empowering communities through transparent governance
(EL PASO) -- For two decades, Jalisco Cafe has fed the less fortunate for free on Thanksgiving.
Owner Hector Chavez said he's got the back of families who did not receive SNAP benefits because of the government shutdown.
"No problem," Chavez said in a Facebook post. "Struggling families, veterans, newcomers, and individuals from all walks of life are invited to enjoy the same traditional meal that many of us are fortunate to share."

"We've been blessed to serve El Paso since 1954, and this is our way of giving back to the community that has supported us," Chavez adds. "Our Thanksgiving is your Thanksgiving."
Chavez encourages "community contributions to help make the event even more special," and "encourages dropping off extra turkeys, canned vegetables, bottled water, sodas, or desserts at the Jalisco Cafe," along with monetary donations.

Sacred Heart encourages volunteers to help tomorrow. At a time of year when many find themselves weary in heart, despite the bright lights and surrounding holiday joy, the American Heart Association shows that reaching out to others serves you and them. As we become energized and engaged, studies show that helping others lessens stress and anxiety, two of the holiday's culprits.
If you are interested in volunteering tomorrow, contact Sacred Heart at 915-532-5447 for more information.
