(DANVILLE, Calif.) — Both San Ramon Valley High School and Monte Vista High School have opened the season with undefeated 4-0 records, giving the city two teams entering league competition with plenty of momentum.
San Ramon Valley has been particularly dominant on the scoreboard. Through its first four games, the Wolves have scored 189 points while allowing 41. The team most recently defeated Clovis North 42-7 on September 18.
The Wolves' offense has been a major part of their early success, consistently putting points on the board while their defense has limited opposing offenses. The strong start has put San Ramon Valley among the top teams.
Across town, Monte Vista has also put together an unbeaten start.
The Mustangs defeated James Logan 41-21 on September 18, adding another win to a schedule that already included victories over Marin Catholic, Liberty, and Campolindo. The two schools have taken different paths through the opening weeks of the season, but the result has been the same: neither has lost.
Now the stakes become higher.
San Ramon Valley is scheduled to host Foothill on September 25, while Monte Vista is scheduled to travel to Dublin that night. The games are an opportunity for both teams to continue building momentum as league play gets underway.
The undefeated starts also add interest to the teams' eventual meeting later in the season.
San Ramon Valley and Monte Vista are scheduled to play November 6 at Monte Vista. The game will bring together two Danville teams that have managed to make themselves among the top in the league.
For San Ramon Valley, the matchup will be another opportunity to continue its recent success in the rivalry. For Monte Vista, playing the Wolves at home will provide a chance to make its own statement in what should be one of the most closely watched games of the local season.
There is still plenty of football to be played before November, however.
Both teams will have to get through their league schedules before they can turn their full attention to the rivalry game. Injuries, changes in momentum, and the strength of opposing teams could all shape how the season develops.
For now, though, Danville has two undefeated football teams entering the heart of the season.
That gives local fans something unusual to follow: two neighboring high schools, both 4-0, both looking to remain unbeaten and both with their sights set on a strong finish.
The next several weeks will determine whether the undefeated starts can turn into something more.
