Empowering communities through transparent governance
ATLANTA-GA District 5 Councilwoman Liliana Bakhtiari is accused of hypocrisy.
Bakhtiari called the police on African American security guard Antony Monfort while at Oakland Cemetery last year. Bakhtiari was at the venue after hours, and Monfort asked her to leave before more police arrived.
Montfort was allegedly pushed by Bakhtiari after announcing himself, losing his job because of Bakhtiari’s position in the Atlanta City Council.
The incident is significant because Bakhtiari claims she is against jailing African Americans.
Dr. Duwon Robinson said to OpGov.AI “I wasn't coming out to speak out against her when she got up there and lied and said, I am not for jailing people.”
Dr. Duwon Robinson speaks at a regular city council meeting
Open Governance reached out to Councilwoman Bakhtiari about the critical comments from Robinson.
“Duwon Robinson – a career antagonist – once again warps reality in service of his ambitions,” Councilwoman Liliana Bakhtiari’s Spokesperson, Nicholas Cappon, said to OpGov.Ai. “As is true for all of those who have fallen victim to Mr. Robinson’s deranged obsessions, his assertions do not merit a thoughtful response.”
Despite the passage of time, Robinson still has strong feelings about how Bakhtiari acted and handled the situation.
Robinson, an Atlanta resident and Morgan State University alumnus, attended the regular city council meeting on Oct 20.
“I've been speaking against her ever since the incident happened,” Robinson said. “Because she didn't call 911, she called Bernie Towkarz, who's a city vendor that hires off-duty police officers. And looking at the tape, because I still had video footage, she was clearly drunk and probably on something else at that park.”
Robinson believes Bakhtiari could have handled the situation differently, given who she is.
“If you were really being robbed, and you're a city councilwoman, if you're really being robbed, you will call 911, not a city
vendor, who's your friend,” Robinson said.
Bakhtiari left the room before Robinson spoke, showing there is an issue and tension between the two. Robinson has tried to talk to Bakhtiari when he sees her, but hasn’t been successful.
“She needs to be held accountable for her actions,” Robinson said.
Robinson has allegedly been critical of everyone if it gets him on camera.
