(CHARLOTTE) -- Nonprofit organizations and city partners expand access to food, shelter, and holiday assistance for unsheltered citizens in the colder weather, during the holidays.

Local service providers say meals, emergency shelter, and toy drives are available throughout Mecklenburg County, with several organizations increasing capacity through December to meet rising demand.
Food Assistance Available Daily
Hot meals and food assistance are available across Charlotte through coordinated service locations. The Homeless Resource Center, located at 618 North College St., erves as a central access point for people seeking meals, referrals, and case management. Individuals can also call Coordinated Entry at 704-284-9665 to be connected with food pantries and emergency resources.
Community outreach groups are also delivering food directly to people living unsheltered. Hearts United for Good conducts regular street outreach, distributing meals, water, and hygiene items throughout the city.
Faith-based organizations, including Advent Lutheran Church, continue weekly community meals and mobile outreach efforts during the holiday season.

Advocates say calling NC 2-1-1 remains one of the fastest ways to locate nearby food options, with operators available 24 hours a day.
Shelter Options Expand During Cold Weather
Emergency shelter remains available for men, women, and families across Charlotte. The Men’s Shelter of Charlotte provides daytime services and coordinates access to overnight shelter for men, while the Salvation Army Center of Hope offers emergency shelter for women and families.
The Urban Ministry Center supports individuals through shelter access, case management, and housing referrals. During severe cold weather, shelters may expand capacity and work with city transportation partners to ensure individuals can safely reach warming locations.
For individuals recently discharged from hospitals, Samaritan House offers short-term medical respite housing, meals, and health-focused support services.

Toy Drives Aim To Support Families And Children
Several Charlotte organizations are hosting toy drives to support children in families experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity.
Project Downtown Charlotte is collecting new, unwrapped toys and winter items through early December and plans to distribute gifts and groceries to families before Christmas. Community volunteers will assist with sorting and distribution later this month.
National efforts such as Toys for Tots are also active in the Charlotte area, with local drop-off sites accepting donations as requests from families continue to rise.
Nonprofits say toy drives not only provide gifts but help reduce stress for parents already struggling to meet basic needs during the holidays.
