(SAN RAMON, CA.) - The San Ramon City Council meeting on July 14 enacted a proclamation declaring July 2026 as Park and Recreation Month and Parks Make Life Better Month.
Presented to Parks and Community Services Recreation Supervisor Adam Chow by Mayor Mark Armstrong, the proclamation serves to honor the benefits that park and recreational activities bring to San Ramon socially, economically, and physically.
“This proclamation recognizes the importance of access to local parks, recreation, trails, open space, and facilities for the positive development of all San Ramon residents,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong continued to note how parks and recreation keep the economy bustling as partnerships with local businesses and nonprofits offer events for resident engagement, and how they provide valuable experiences through youth sports, enrichment activities, teen centers and programs, senior activity centers, adult fitness and enrichment programs, and free community events.
“Parks and recreation supports human development and endless learning opportunities that foster social, intellectual, physical, and emotional growth in people of all ages and abilities,” Armstrong said.
Director of Parks and Community Services Henry Perezalonso took the podium to address why this proclamation is important.
“[The California Parks and Recreation Society] really highlights how we put play in all of our lives and how much of a vital community service we are,” Perezalonso said. “We do it through play. We do it through nature, the exercise that we provide, through our opportunities, positive spaces, gathering spaces- we try and do this for now and forever.”

Perezalonso stated that the opening of the new Critter Crossroads Park, which officially became available for the public on Wednesday, July 15, is the 59th park in San Ramon. Perezalonso also hinted at a 60th one coming in the future.
Parks Commissioner for the San Ramon Parks and Community Services Commission Kyle Levy also took the podium to highlight the important role that parks and recreation play for the quality of life.
“And it's not just the parks,” Levy said. “It's all the programs that go into it, the community events- the sense of community that parks help create.”

Finally, Parks and Community Services Recreation Supervisor Adam Chow took the podium to promote many events happening in the community.
On Friday, the Dougherty Valley Aquatic Center will be playing Coco for their dive-in movie theater at 7 p.m., Saturday will have a Parks Make Life Better event for a clean-up at Athan Downs Park from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and Sunday will bring a summer concert featured at Central Park’s amphitheater at 5:30 p.m.
“I hope that our community and our council and everybody else will be able to take advantage of all the different opportunities for these parks, services, and facilities because parks do make life better,” Chow said.
