(BRICK, N.J.) — Law enforcement arrested a suspect after a pursuit for a suspect who sped in a school zone.
It was previously reported that a police officer stopped the unidentified individual, then quickly sped off, almost hitting a crossing guard and disregarded a stop sign.
The Brick Township Police Department has now identified the driver as Corey Goodwin, 38, of Brick.

At approximately 7 a.m. on September 8, a Brick Township Police Traffic Safety Officer, David Thergesen, was assigned to enforce school zone traffic on Lanes Mill Road near Brick Memorial High School. Thergesen observed a vehicle stopped on the shoulder to drop off children, which was deemed unsafe.
Thergesen then approached the vehicle to find that Goodwin was not wearing a seatbelt and to pull into the Boland Field “so the motor vehicle stop could be conducted in a safe location,” according to the BTPD.
After Thergesen left the vehicle, Goodwin initially appeared to comply with Thergesen’s direction by turning on his left turn signal. However, Goodwin accelerated northbound on Lanes Mill Road at a reported high rate of speed. He crossed over the southbound lanes and passed vehicles on the left. He reportedly nearly struck two crossing guards who had stop signs up in both directions.
Officer Thergesen returned to his marked police vehicle and then pursued a chase. While the chase was actively occurring, Officer Michael Defluri clocked Goodwin’s vehicle traveling at 73 mph.
Goodwin eventually stopped his vehicle at a residence on Lanes Mill Road before fleeing on foot. Officers pursued Goodwin through the area of Sawmill Road and Creek Road, where He crossed a creek, and officers located and apprehended him.
Goodwin is charged with eluding, aggravated assault on a police officer, hindering apprehension and obstructing the administration of law. Upon arrest, officers found two outstanding warrants for his arrest.
The BTPD also issued motor vehicle summonses, including reckless driving, passing in a no-passing zone, failure to obey a police officer directing traffic, failure to comply with a police officer’s direction, and failure to stop for a crossing guard’s whistle.
Goodwin was transported and lodged in the Ocean County Jail.
The BTPD also urged all drivers around school zones to “exercise the utmost caution, remain alert, obey posted traffic laws, and follow the directions of police officers and school crossing guards.”
“The Department will continue its aggressive enforcement of traffic laws in and around our school zones to protect our children, school employees, crossing guards, pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists,” the BTPD said in a statement.
