(ARIZONA) – While there was a Democratic sweep across the Arizona desert in statewide elections on Election Night, the state’s voting results in statewide propositions were more mixed, fitting the Grand Canyon State’s traditional reputation of being a ‘purple’ state.
The Culture Wars
A Republican-led ban on DEI policies with state government policies and processes has failed, 39 percent to 61 percent, with over 1 million votes against the proposition. The defeat of Proposition 142 also showcases the influx of more liberal voters from California, Oregon, Washington, and even Texas in the past decade, along with the fact that half of Arizona votes from the 2010 election are now deceased.
In the evening’s other major ‘culture war’ proposition, Proposition 144, which would require voters to show identification and to be a citizen to vote, was voted down 55 percent to 45 percent. Experts believe the defeat came mainly because it is already illegal to vote as a non-citizen in Arizona.
The Taxes
One of the most hotly contested proposition races, Proposition 141, is still too close to call. Proposition 141 is a ballot measure that would stop the state from proceeding to identify an alternative to the existing gas tax.
With 74 percent of votes counted, 50.0 percent (903,510 votes) are against the proposition and 50.0 percent (904,935 votes) are for the proposition.
A Republican proposal, Proposition 316 to limit new grocery taxes by individual cities, passed by the biggest margin of all propositions with 60 percent of the vote. The vote was a clear referendum on the current state of the economy as
Arizonans are already feeling higher prices at grocery stores, and were not going to voluntarily
vote for the possibility of higher groceries.
School Situations
Proposition 320, which would require specific Arizona schools to increase their spending or risk funding being taken away from schools from Kindergarten to 12th grade, was defeated 52 percent to 47 percent.
The proposition’s defeat showcases the shift to a younger demographic in Arizona’s electorate, including many young families with children. In previous elections, the state’s large retirement community was quick to cut education funding.
In a combination of a school proposition and a culture war, Arizona voters passed Proposition 318, which forces students to use the bathroom of their gender at birth, and also to play the sport of their birth gender.
Proposition 318 passed 58 percent to 42 percent.
Uniquely Arizona Propositions
Photo traffic enforcement has been a major issue with Arizona residents for nearly 20 years, and it now seems residents have made sure voters have to approve any further new photo enforcement by passing Proposition 319, 60 percent to 40 Percent.
And finally, Proposition 317, which formally labels drug cartels as terrorist groups, passed 56 percent to 44 percent.
