(TALLAHASSEE, FL.) — Florida State Representative Angie Nixon won the Democratic nomination for Florida Senate on Tuesday, according to unofficial results from the Florida Division of Elections. Nixon defeated Alex Vindman 56% to 44%.
Nixon, a union organizer and mother born and raised in Jacksonville, has served in the Florida House since November 2020. In the Legislature, she sponsored bills to expand childcare access and opposed changes to Florida’s redistricting of congressional maps.

“I’m running to lower costs, raise wages, and build a people-powered government that puts families first; not greedy billionaires,” Nixon wrote on her website.
Nixon’s campaign platform includes Medicare for All, free childcare, free paid family and sick leave, a national rent freeze and moratorium on evictions, and a universal jobs program with inflation-adjusted wages, according to her campaign website.
When asked how she would pay for the proposals, Nixon’s site lists three items: “Tax the billionaires so that everyone pays their fair share,” “prioritize the needs of everyday Americans instead of spending trillions on war and violence overseas,” and “get big money out of politics.”
Nixon said her policy views are shaped by her background. She cited watching her mother work two jobs, attending public schools in Jacksonville, and losing her cousin to gun violence, according to her campaign. Nixon raised $875,000 compared to $16.3M for Vindman.
Nixon will face the Republican nominee Ashley Moody, in the November general election.
