(PENSACOLA) --- It's no coincidence that on the eve of America's 250th birthday, the Supreme Court ruled today on American citizenship.
On day two of OpGov.News "America 250," we look to George Washington again, following up on his June 29 General Orders of Attack. Today, 250 years ago, America's famous general found out that dozens of enemy ships were arriving on the New York shores at Sandy Hook.

MountVernon.org reports Washington’s words to John Hancock.
“When I had the honor of addressing you Yesterday, I had only been informed of the arrival of Forty five of the fleet in the morning, since that I have received authentic Intelligence from sundry persons, among them from Genl Greene, that One hundred & Ten Sail came in before night that were counted, and that more were seen about dusk in the Offing. I have no doubt but the whole that sailed from Hallifax are now at the Hook,” Washington penned to Hancock.
While Washington’s victory was yet unknown, today’s win in the Supreme Court decision confirms that if you are born on American soil, you are a U.S. citizen regardless of what any president says, and all the more reason to celebrate this week of freedom.

The History Channel details how citizenship was first limited to “free white people,” setting enslaved and Native Americans apart. But Dred Scott changed that when he sued for citizenship, which was denied him due to his African American descent.
“In 1862, Attorney General Edward Bates tackled the issue in connection with African American members of the Union Army, finding that “free men of color” born on American soil were American,” History.com reports.
Today, no matter what color you are, you are an American when born in any of the 50 states, making you free among all men and women. That liberty is ringing down American streets in dozens of states, with Freedom 250 Trucks spreading the love of country across the country. The interactive, traveling museum brings the present and the past together for residents who request a visit from the group.

There are three curricula for the Freedom Truck, each featuring Places to Know, People to Meet, and Terms & Topics. Along with the interactive, traveling museums, the Freedom 250 website offers 10-minute videos on subjects ranging from the “Faith of Our Founders” to the “U.S. Marine Corps Birthday.”
The last stop for all Freedom Trucks will be at the National Mall on Saturday, when “more than 850,000 pyrotechnic effects will be launched from multiple locations surrounding the National Mall, West Potomac Park, and the Potomac River,” according to the Freedom 250 Media Center, which adds that the 35-minute show will be roughly twice the length of a traditional national show.
OpGov.News will be back tomorrow with some more birthday history as well as local U.S. Birthday events happening in Pensacola and Escambia County for residents to enjoy.
